Full-body color

The color goes all the way through

Our tiles are never painted or surface-sprayed. Pigment is blended into the Polysand™ composite before the tile is formed, and our own custom-developed process disperses it uniformly through the entire thickness — so the color on the surface is the same color running all the way to the core.

That means more stable color over time: there is no coating to chalk, flake or wear off, and scratches are not a problem.

Tile thickness comparison

Our tile is 38% thicker

On a roof, thickness is the material doing the work. The Polysand SyntheticSlate™ deck carries 38% more of it than the competitor tile shown below — and that shows up in almost everything the tile has to do.

  • More Rigid — better wind uplift resistance — a rigid tile resists lifting when wind gets under a course — and better physical stability in high heat weather.
  • Tougher on Impact — more material means more energy absorbed before anything gives. Hail, falling branches and foot traffic are far less likely to crack, dent or puncture the tile.
  • Longer Service Life — sun, rain and freeze-thaw cycles work on a tile from the surface inward. The thicker the section, the smaller the share of it that decades of weathering can consume.
  • Better Thermal Resistance — a thicker tile slows heat moving through the roof and softens the daily temperature swing beneath it — less thermal stress on the tile, and less heat pushed into the attic.
  • Stronger Fastener Hold — more material around every nail means a firmer grip and far greater resistance to tear-through when wind gets under a course.
  • Better Overall Performance — rigidity, mass and thickness compound: a quieter roof under heavy rain, a flatter and more uniform slate line, and dependable behavior from -60°C to +80°C.

The virgin resin advantage

100% virgin resin

A polymer does not survive recycling unchanged — each cycle degrades it further, and the lifespan it has left gets shorter every time. The resin binding each Polysand™ tile is virgin, never previously processed. The recycled content in our tiles is lightweight mineral filler, not the resin that has to survive fifty winters.

  • Stronger Molecular Structure — every time a plastic is melted and reformed, its molecular chains break down. Virgin resin arrives with those chains long and intact, and that is where the tile's tensile and impact strength comes from.
  • Holds Its Color — recycled plastic carries unknown additives from its previous life, and UV breaks them down into fading, chalking and discoloration. Pure resin takes pigment cleanly and keeps it.
  • Every Tile Behaves the Same — recycled feedstock varies from batch to batch, so tiles can expand, contract and warp at different rates. Virgin resin means every tile on the roof reacts to heat, cold and freeze-thaw identically.
  • The Basis of the 50-Year Warranty — a tile lasts only as long as the polymer it is made from. Starting at full strength is what gives ours their long life, and what lets us stand behind fifty years.

9 1/2" exposure with 3" headlap as standard

Effortless Installation

Polysand SyntheticSlate™ tiles are designed as 12" wide by 22" high tiles with a 9 1/2" exposure. The installation process is streamlined and efficient, mirroring natural slate installation. A minimum 3" headlap ensures superior leak protection, while built-in marks on the tile simplify alignment for consistent exposure. Easily cut with a standard circular saw, any cut-offs can be returned and recycled.
